Our mission of Empowerment extends beyond prom.
Tackling Period Poverty is one.
Period poverty is the umbrella term for inequities related to menstruation.
Menstrual hygiene products remain out of reach for many Houston area households.
Low-income and homeless women and girls struggle with period poverty.
Period products are not eligible to be purchased with food stamps, Medicaid, or health insurance spending accounts.
Many girls experience the indignity and shame of being unable to care for themselves during their periods.
ONE in FOUR teens ave missed class because of lack of access to period products.
"I haven't been able to afford pads, so I normally ask other girls if they have one or two that I can use. I feel bad and ashamed because I just don't have the money."
We are asking ministries, volunteer and service groups to link arms with us to provide period products to girls in need in the Houston area. We have relationships with many school counselors and teen after-school programs who have expressed the desperate need for these items. Your group can host a collection for any size tampons, pads, pantyliners and individually wrapped feminine hygiene wipes ...then package them in affordable, reusable canvas bags found on Amazon or in quart-sized ziplock bags. Once a collection is made and packaged, Giving Gown will coordinate pick up then distribute to our community partners and schools.
